Like to learn a little Greek?
Well here's a few useful words that you can use whilst out and about.
It's always good to learn the 'niceties' when you go to a foreign country, and the local people certainly
seem to appreciate that you do. Take care though - if you ask for something in Greek you may get an answer in Greek!
You should also take note that 'Cyprus Greek' is as different from 'Mainland Greek' as Geordie is from Cornish! So if you learn from a greek phrase book you won't always be understood but persevere and you'll find that people usually help you out, even if they are having a laugh at you at the same time! Shopkeepers and Restauranteurs are usually quite helpful as they deal with the tourists and many different languages and pronunciations every day.
One problem that is encountered with Greek is the use of gender. Nouns change with gender, unlike English. One pound in English is just that, or A pound, but in Greek it's mia lire, not ena lire, because the pound is female! The same goes for beer. Mia
beera not
ena beera. To make it more confusing more than one item is still deo or treea etc;
I've asked several people how you know whether something is male or female, but the best answer was 'you just know!' But the main thing to remember is to have fun learning! In the pub is the best place for me, because the more beers I have, the better my Greek gets!
